domesticity
oh heavenly domesticity,
take me in your warm embrace,
shield me from the small cruelties,
that i can’t bear to face.
kitchen mornings,
tv evenings,
laptop in the bed at night,
i hold you tight,
i hold you tight.
oh my common-in-law husband,
i’m only me when i’m with you,
want to put you in my pocket,
to have you on the move.
straining daydreams,
stressful headaches,
panic sets my day alight,
i hold you tight,
i hold you tight.
common people
i suppose that i am common,
yes, i am that common woman,
and you can be my common man,
we are wedded,
common in law,
as we lay together in our bed,
in this one room domicile,
it’s nicely kept.
oh, how hard it is to wait for you,
the wind is calmer now in night,
but i hear a rhythmic dripping,
leftover rain water,
on the corrugated plastic roofing,
as i silently drink tea, and sulk,
thinking of how you don’t have an umbrella.
thinking of how you don’t have any money for a cab,
thinking of how we don’t have any money at all.
come back to me soon,
i don’t like to be without you,
for we have a life together,
rich with common pleasure.
